Inspired by the first leaders of the Canadian democratic movement, the LaFontaine–Baldwin lectures have been encouraging Canadians to engage with each other, embrace culture, and discuss democracy and citizenship. This year’s lecture took place on October 6 at the Jack Singer Concert Hall, and was focused on the theme of Reconciliation and the Evolution of Canada.
As the supporting sponsor, Bird Creatives had the honour of producing and co-curating a memorable artist reception for the LaFontaine - Baldwin Lecture, in collaboration with the Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC), Tourism Calgary, and Arts Commons.
This artist reception celebrated and showcased the vibrancy of Calgary’s Arts Community and set the tone prior to the Governor General’s lecture. Held in the Jack Singer Concert Hall Lobby, dozens of culturally diverse and incredibly talented artists activated the reception space through live painting, music, and dance performances.
The keynote speaker of the event was Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, who spoke on the importance of teaching Canada’s true history and the nation’s steps towards reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. You can read Mary Simon’s full speech here.
We’d like to thank the following artists for participating at this event:
