NOVUS TEXTURA: REWEAVING THE URBAN FABRIC

On June 5, 2023, the Calgary Downtown Association unveiled a colourful new fibre-art installation, crafted by local artists Gordon Skilling and Jolie Bird. This installation, named “Novus Textura” beautifully intertwines with the strong roots of the existing Galleria Trees installation. Novus Textura serves as a symbol of Calgary's rich heritage of ingenuity and perseverance, beautifully expressed through the power of collaboration.

These days you’re hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t use either Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter (a.k.a. “the Big Three”). We had the pleasure of chatting with Dr. Natalie Meisner. An accomplished queer professor, writer, and mother. Natalie’s most recent play, “Legislating Love: The Everett Klippert Story,” won the Oscar Wilde Award for best script at the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival.

In this interview, we discussed local gay history, working in the creative space as a queer person, mentorship, advice for queer creatives, and how allies can meaningfully support the community.

Celebrating Life – A New and Inspired Festival for Calgary

In March, Bird Creatives was hired to assist with the marketing of Celebrating Life, a festival growing out of two years of isolation. The festival began as an idea to help our community work through loss, together. True to its name, it is less about death and more about celebrating and honouring the lives of those who are no longer with us. Inspired by the Mexican tradition of Día de Muertos and the experience of the Equinox Vigil, Celebrating Life’s aim is to encourage us to connect with, support, and uplift each other as we move forward with a renewed hope for the future.
