Thriving Music Can Serve Edmonton’s Strategic Priorities.
This strategy aims to increase the social, cultural and economic impacts that music has on our city. These aims align with many existing strategies, especially as they centre on vibrant neighbourhoods, creative expression, celebration of diversity and culture, and growth of local businesses and secure job opportunities. We’ve listed out major goals and aims from six city strategies/plans and noted alignment where this strategy’s priority directions align with them.

Thriving Music Can Serve Calgary’s Strategic Priorities
This strategy aims to increase the social, cultural and economic impacts that music has on Calgary. These aims align with a variety of existing municipal plans and strategies. In particular, alignment is easily seen in those strategies addressing year-round visitor experiences, quality of local living, the creative design of multi-use public spaces (especially for shows and events), and the evolution of Calgary’s character and reputation.
CreativeCITY: Prosperity through the Creative Economy Report
In the first half of 2021, Calgary Arts Development participated in the creation of an ecosystem report exploring Calgary’s creative economy alongside partners from Bird Creatives, RISE UP Calgary, Calgary Economic Development, The City of Calgary, and CityXLab.
Despite its significant economic, social, human, and environmental contributions to our region, Calgary’s creative economy is underleveraged and overlooked due to a creative ecosystem that is fragmented and inefficient.
West Anthem Music Ecosystem Study
This 2020 study provides a snapshot of the Edmonton and Calgary music industry pre-pandemic and provides insight into the immense opportunity music provides for the long-term resiliency and vibrancy of our province.
West Anthem was established to help stimulate the growth and sustainability of Alberta’s music industry. Its objectives are to develop a comprehensive understanding of the economic profile of Alberta’s music cluster, to build the business capacity of the music industry, to utilize Alberta’s music industry as a key economic driver and a vehicle for diversification, and to establish and implement a live music strategy for Alberta through venue mapping and audience profiling.
