Celebrating Indigenous Creativity and Culture: Bird Creatives’ Support for Three Remarkable Events

October 5, 2023 | CALGARY, EVENTS, WHAT'S HAPPENING

In September, Bird Creatives was thrilled to support three remarkable Indigenous events created by Authentically Indigenous, produced to highlight some of Calgary’s diverse talent during the 2023 World Petroleum Congress. These events showcased the talent, heritage, and innovation of Indigenous artists and makers from Treaty 7 and beyond. These events not only celebrated culture but also empowered artisans within local Indigenous communities.

About Authentically Indigenous Inc.

Founded in 2015 by Melrene Saloy and Autumn EagleSpeaker, Authentically Indigenous aims to bridge the gap between Indigenous art and the wider public, establishing an accessible market for Indigenous artisans. Their mission is to amplify local Indigenous creativity, arts, and culture by curating markets, cultural events, and workshops.

Authentically Indigenous specializes in cultural event planning and consultation, fostering connections between non-Indigenous businesses, organizations, and school groups, and authentic Indigenous experiences. They further facilitate craft workshops, land-based learning, and cultural knowledge sessions with esteemed local Elders and knowledge keepers. To date, Authentically Indigenous has worked with the likes of Amazon, Enmax, and ATCO, among others.

This event invited visitors to explore a world of rich heritage and creativity. By connecting visitors with authentic Indigenous craftsmanship that ranged from traditional beading and silversmith work, to digital art and 3D printed jewelry, the market created a space for commerce that was not merely transactional but transformational.

Moreover, attendees could peruse to the curated tracks of Indigenous music from MC GoodMedicine, illuminating the profound cultural legacy of Treaty 7's Indigenous people. This event was a unique opportunity to celebrate heritage, support artisans, and build bridges between cultures.
