On May 12, 2023, the 27th Esquao Awards ceremony took place, marking a remarkable celebration of the accomplishments, resilience, and invaluable contributions made by Indigenous women to their communities. Held at the Grey Eagle Resort and Casino, the event brought together esteemed guests, dignitaries, and passionate supporters. The ceremony aimed to honour outstanding Indigenous women from diverse fields, encompassing arts, culture, activism, education, leadership, and entrepreneurship. The recipients of the Esquao Awards demonstrated exceptional talent, unwavering dedication, and a profound commitment to creating positive change, inspiring future generations. The evening was filled with captivating performances, heartfelt speeches, and an atmosphere teeming with pride and admiration. Serving as a powerful platform to amplify Indigenous women's voices and celebrate their achievements, the 2023 Esquao Awards ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the immense talent and resilience inherent within Indigenous communities. The annual Esquao Awards serve as a testament to the accomplishments and impactful contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit women throughout Alberta. By recognizing exceptional women, these awards bring awareness to the unique challenges and barriers they face in their lives.
This year, the 27th edition of the Esquao Awards honoured outstanding recipients who excelled as leaders in trades and technology, education, and business. The recipients also included teachers of traditional Indigenous culture and holistic health, as well as advocates tirelessly seeking justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

About Esquao, the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women
Esquao, the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women (IAAW), is an Edmonton-based organization dedicated to empowering Indigenous women and girls. The organization's name, "Esquao," meaning "woman" in Cree, encapsulates their commitment to supporting Indigenous women on their journey of healing, growth, and self-determination.
Since its inception in 1995, the Esquao Awards have provided well-deserved recognition to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit women across Alberta, shedding light on their achievements and raising awareness about the obstacles they encounter. Over the years, the Esquao Awards have grown to become the largest recognition event for Indigenous women in Canada. This prestigious event underscores the significant role Indigenous women play within their communities, contributing to the healing, development, and overall growth of Alberta. To date, nearly 500 women from 93 communities in Alberta have received the esteemed Esquao Awards. The annual Esquao Awards Gala attracts approximately 600 attendees from across the province and beyond, including government officials, Indigenous organizations, Métis and First Nation leaders, businesses, friends, and supporters.
